During the late 1800's, people circulated small cloths strips with baseball players names on them and this is what could of been considered the birth of the trading card hobby. If you can find any of those today, they are very rare and worth quite a bit of money.
The early 1900s saw the first printed cardboard baseball cards. They were actually designed as gimmicks and meant to be distributed with stuff like snacks, gum etc. May different styles and sizes were used since most of the producers of the cards really had settled on a set style of look. Many of those early cards have lots of misprints on them and are worth a small fortune if you can find them.
During the beginning of 1937, most of the manufacturers had got together and decided on the style and size which are in circulation now. It was after this that the cards started to develop a following and were actually being sold as standalones instead being packaged as gimmick with other products.
